Table top swap

For the last year, we have been searching for a new table for our dining area. I say dining area because we have a very open floor plan and the dining room and living room are pretty much one. That's why our old, pub height, iron and stone table was just a little too much. The thing is, it was free and it's really hard to beat free.

Our former table.
After a year of deal searching, cue some other friends of ours who also just happen to have an extra table on their hands. They didn't just have a table either- it was a pre-sanded table which meant we could make it  any color or finish we wanted! It was a pretty perfect situation.

Before we chose a stain type, I made this quick linen table cloth for the top so that we wouldn't damage it.
New yet unfinished and covered.

Then we got to staining. We went ahead and did a quick sanding just so things would soak in and decided on a cherry stain. Three layers of stain and two applications of lacquer later (plus drying time) we had ourselves a brand new looking table!

Finny was a big fan of the shade.
Our fancy method of hanging and drying. Dental floss- not even kidding.
This project isn't completely finished as we plan on switching out the table legs to something more parsonish. Then, we'll replace the chairs. I'm thinking something upholstered on the ends with matching cherry on the sides. To be continued!

Ta-dah!
