Happy Earth Day!
One of the ways I'm celebrating Earth Day today is sitting down and plotting our big landscaping project for this year. In an effort to reduce to the amount of turf grass in our yard, we're mulching our entire fence line and will work our way in, little by little over the next few years.
Less turf means less mowing, which in return, means less fuel and emissions used to power a mower. Planted areas also help with drainage when the roots establish and create a more natural underground water filtration.
Since last Earth Day, we've also plated 15 trees in our backyard! We started out with not one tree in the backyard when we bought this house. In fact, the previous owner had all of the mature trees removed a couple years ago. The trees have provided some needed habitat for the many birds in our area and once they've grown a bit more, will give us some added privacy in the yard.
In my opinion, more planted vegetation just looks better than a bunch of monotonous green, water and energy sucking grass. I'm thinking the wildlife in our area will appreciate the habitat a lot more too! My hope is that in a few years we wont have turf, but a few paths around our backyard weaving around mostly vegetable gardens and flower beds.
How are you celebrating Earth Day this year?
