This weekend we did some wedding registering at Bed Bath and Beyond and I found quite the gem that I had to buy. What could be better than a cookie in the shape of your home-state? There is something about bake-goods in familiar shapes that makes them all the better. And yes, I made my Indiana's blue as the day is long.
Here are a few facts about Indiana (other than it's shape makes cookies taste good):
- Our state song: When I Think About the Banks Along the Wabash Far Away (here is some cool info on that.)
- Indiana means "Land of the Indians" but as of 2008 only 0.3% of our population is made of up Native Americans. Typical.
- State Flower: The Peony. This was adopted by the General Assembly in 1957. For some reason I expected it to be much earlier.
- The State language, English, wasn't officially adopted until 1984.
- During Prohibition, the Al Brady and John Dillinger gangs were patrons of the Slippery Noodle Inn, one of Indiana's oldest bars. Established in 1850, the Inn considered itself Indiana's oldest bar. The gangs used the building in the rear (originally a horse stable for the Inn) for target practice. Today, several bullets remain embedded in the lower east wall.
- The first successful goldfish farm in the United States was opened in Martinsville, Indiana, in 1899
- Famous Hoosiers include: The Jackson 5, Red Skelton, Hoagy Carmichael, Larry Bird, James Dean, Cole Porter, Janey Pauley, Florence Henderson, and David Letterman.
