When you think about it, change is something that starts locally. What a crazy thing to think about. I like to remind myself of that when I look at something big and think, "How did they do that??!". Because when it comes down to it everything, big or small, that happens comes from one person's idea. The mind is an amazing thing, huh?
Take a look at this video, for instance.
Some might see this and say, "That is a nice thought but good luck getting a bunch of people together to make a big enough difference". Well that's fine if you like having that kind of attitude but I personally feel that doing something for the greater good is not only gratifying but if done on a regular basis can make you a happier person. And that happiness can be downright contagious and is the kind of happiness that not only benefits you but the community in which you live.
It was for George Bailey who had plenty of opportunities to skip town, become a wealthy architect, and really live it up. Instead, he saw that a few little things that he could do locally really mattered and in the end his deeds created a community that could support itself. And ultimately a sentiment that millions of people seek out each holiday season when they watch, "It's a Wonderful Life" for the billionth time because they love the story.
When you start thinking of your money, your home, your food all just being yours, it can become a dangerous thing. You are not the only one who had a hand in the money you earned. Your parents might have encouraged you to go to college to pursue the job you have, your first part-time boss gave you the skills to bring to the workplace you are in now. The food you eat was grown by a farmer, delivered by a delivery driver, placed on a shelf by some guy who works the late shift at the local grocery store. So really, nothing you have was truly created by you, so why hoard it?
This year, my first New Year's resolution will be to think locally and and live communally.
